An 80-year-old Stoke man who collapsed at the wheel of his Ute on State Highway 60 near Tasman yesterday was lucky to have help close at hand - the vehicle travelling behind him (that our Daddy was driving!) was an ambulance.
St John Ambulance team manager Gary Tobin said that crew found the driver unconscious in his car in a ditch.
He had no pulse and was not breathing.
They resuscitated that man, who was flown to Nelson Hospital by the Summit Rescue Helicopter in a critical condition.
The ambulance had been transporting two patients from Motueka to Nelson. A second ambulance, also on its way to Nelson, arrived at the scene three minutes later, returning to Motueka, also stopped at the scene.
Constable Duncan Hamilton, of Motueka police, was travelling nearby and came across the Ute in the ditch.
He said the driver was 'a very lucky gentleman' to have an ambulance so close.
He said there were no other vehicles involved in the accident and the man was not speeding.
The road was blocked between Marriages Rd and Permin Rd for about 35 minutes.
A spokesperson for Nelson Hospital this morning said the man was in a serious condition.
So our Daddy was driving the ambulance that was right behind the old man who crashed. He had a very very busy day that Tuesday in the ambulance, there were loads of things happening. Unfortunately the old man died.
